Two years ago, Kathryn Chung from Hawaii sent me an e-mail. All it said was “Guidance - with God’s help you and I can dance.”
That message started me thinking about Guidance. I reflected on the guidance my Parents gave me as I was growing up. My mom, Anne Fetz, continues to provide me with valuable guidance. It was mom and dad who took me to their square dances and showed me how to express my joy of life through music and Dance. Thanks, mom!
When the Jaycees were founded as a social dance club for young men in St. Louis, I am sure the founders asked for guidance as they set up what was to become the greatest young person’s organization on earth. As Jaycees we ask for divine guidance every time we recite our creed: “We believe that faith in god gives meaning and purpose to human life.”
We asked for guidance from our fellow Jaycees as we conducted projects for our communities and our members. When we became the “experienced” Jaycees, we provided guidance to the newer Jaycees.
This past January, I was thrilled to help present 2 Senatorships to Lisa and Dan Badger from Iowa. They reminded me that I had co-chaired Lisa’s first Jaycee project — a dance for the elderly.
Because of our involvement in our respective chapters, we have been honored with the title “ JCI Senator” and assigned an international number. As senators, we are asked to return the favor and provide guidance to the organization that honored us with our Senatorships. We have many opportunities to “dance with one that brought you” to where you are today. The impact we make when we return the favor will reap benefits for many years to come.
And so I ask you to join me in 2008-2009 as we celebrate the year of “guidance” — remember… With God’s help yoU and I can DANCE.

Thanks to DJ Leppla for this tip. It was noted at the PIE meeting in West Virginia that many people don't have the necessary software on their computers to view certain types of files. Here's what DJ emailed me recently:
"Convenient Conversion http://zamzar.com - Sometimes communication in the digital world requires speaking a different language. In computing terms, this often means converting files to new formats. Zamzar is a free, online file conversion service that allows you to change image, document, music, video, and other types of files into various formats. The service involves four simple steps, and converted files are sent directly to your e-mail account. This site comes in handy, for example, when you receive an e-mail attachment that you can't open with your computer's software."
I'm a dyed-in-the-wool Mac user, and when someone sends me a Microsoft Publisher file, there is no way I can open it. So I sent a Publisher file someone sent me to zamzar.com, and in about half an hour I received a very readable PDF version of the same file. If I wanted to spend $7 a month or more, I could get converted files faster. Give this a try and let me know what you think.

Welcome to the New U.S. JCI Senate Website |

If you've been on this site recently, you've probably noticed that our home page was titled 'Countdown to a new website'. Well, this is it. It has taken us a few weeks to switch the site over from a content management system (CMS) called XOOPS to a newer and better supported CMS called Joomla! All the tools used to build this site were provided by an international open source community, and all of them were obtained for free.
Free in this case doesn't mean simple, by any stretch, unless you're already an expert when it comes to advanced CSS, the Mootools Javascript/AJAX framework, and high-end object-oriented programming in PHP with a complete database abstraction layer. It means that many people have shared their own ideas and hard work with a world-wide community to make Joomla! more robust. Anyway, here are only a few of the things that are improved on this site, as well as some things we intend to add in the near future.
-
We're using something called JEvent to provide an events calendar that is much more powerful than we had before.
-
We've set up a component called Remository (don't ask) to store downloadable files and to provide various people with the ability to upload files. The primary purpose of the upload feature is to allow program managers and commitee chairpeople to provide their reports to you online instead of cutting down another tree for each Board of Directors meeting.
-
We're in the process of installing the Community Builder suite of components and modules which will help complete our transition to a truly community-based website. CB extends Joomla's user management system and will enable us to fine-tune everyone's user experience.
-
We've installed a component that extends Joomla's contact capabilities by adding a CAPTCHA graphic and a Google map to the form people will use to send emails to our administrators, officers, and others who choose to have their contact information made public.
-
As soon as we figure out which extension we want to use for this, we'll be adding a business directory so Senators can network with other Senators for needed products and services.
-
When we figure out how, we'll transition as many of the old site's features over as we can. If you want to see something added here, please don't hesitate to let us know by clicking on Contact Us under the Main Menu and sending either one of us an email. If you're really adventuresome, wander over to http://extensions.joomla.org/ and see what the possibilities are.
Please understand that this website will operate very differently from what you've been used to. Because of how powerful Joomla is overall, we haven't even begun to scratch the surface of what we'll be able to provide here. We'll keep you advised as we continue to add goodies. We would appreciate it if you would spread the word about our new site so we can get more Senators to use it.
